A Screen-Free Space for Tweens

photography: Sheryl Kalis

An attic reading and game room for tweens. The walls are painted Farrow & Ball Vert de Terre, with a window seat and bookshelves painted in turquoise. Cushions are upholstered in Sister Parish Mahalo, and the floor is painted green..

An unused, awkward attic eave space in Belmont was begging to find use as a secret hideaway for the family’s tween-aged children. The catch? No screens allowed.

We added a long, lush window seat that’s deep enough for the occasional adult-sized guest to lounge with a book (only, of course, when access is granted!). Bookshelves and cubbies line one wall — enough space for a tween library, puzzles, and board games (a wall-mounted gate-leg table flips up for use as needed).

No tween space is complete without bean bag chairs and a chalkboard wall; art honoring the kids’ favorite sports (hockey for her, British football for him) adds color and a graphic punch.
